Here are some frequently asked questions about surrogacy and everything you need to know.
What is Surrogacy?
Surrogacy is a reproductive arrangement where a woman agrees to carry and give birth to a child for another person or couple, often referred to as the intended parent(s) or IP(s). There are two primary types:
- Gestational surrogacy: Mostly used today, the surrogate has no genetic connection to the child. An embryo created from the intended parents’ eggs and sperm or that of donor gametes, is then transferred to the surrogate’s uterus.
- Traditional surrogacy: The surrogate is genetically related to the child as she uses her own eggs either by IVF (in vitro fertilization) egg retrieval then fertilized, or IUI (intrauterine insemination), where sperm is placed into the surrogate’s uterus under the direct care of a physician. This type is typically only seen in agreements between close friends and family in today’s world.
Who Needs Surrogacy?
Many individuals and couples turn to surrogacy for a variety of reasons. Here are some common circumstances:
- Uterine Factors: Women without a uterus or with conditions like uterine fibroids, endometriosis, or a history of failed IVF transfers may explore surrogacy.
- Medical Risks: Individuals with medical conditions that make pregnancy high-risk, such as heart disease, diabetes, or certain autoimmune disorders, may choose surrogacy to protect their health.
- Same-Sex Couples: Surrogacy offers the opportunity for same-sex couples to build their families.
- Recurrent Pregnancy Loss: Couples who have experienced multiple miscarriages may consider surrogacy as an alternative path to parenthood.
- Advanced Maternal Age: As a woman’s age increases, the challenges of pregnancy and the risks associated with it also rise. Surrogacy can be an option for older women desiring to have a child.
It’s important to note that these are just some common reasons why people choose surrogacy. Every individual’s journey is unique, and the decision to pursue surrogacy is a deeply personal one.

How Does the Surrogacy Process Work?
The surrogacy process involves several steps, and at STS, we help you navigate the entire journey and limit your stress and uncertainty. In general, the process works like this:
- Matching: Intended parents and a surrogate are matched based on compatibility after the Intended parents have completed making embryos. At Stronger Together Surrogacy, we do everything we can to help our surrogates and intended parents through the journey.
- Medical Screening and Legal: Both parties undergo medical evaluations and have an attorney represent them in Legal Contracts. STS will recommend a list of Attorneys who specialize in ART Law (Assisted Reproductive Technology Law).
- Embryo Transfer: The embryo is transferred to the surrogate’s uterus through a catheter, in vitro fertilization (IVF).
- Pregnancy and Birth: Once the surrogate has a confirmed pregnancy, she carries to term and gives birth to the child.
- Parentage Confirmation: Around 12 weeks gestation, the Parentage Process will begin. This takes a short time with the Attorneys however once complete, the documents are submitted with the state. After submission, typically, this can take between 1-12 weeks, or sometimes longer.
What Are the Costs Involved in Surrogacy?
The cost of surrogacy varies depending on several factors, including legal fees, medical expenses, surrogate compensation, and agency fees. It’s essential to budget accordingly and explore potential financial assistance options.
What Are the Legal Considerations in Surrogacy?
Surrogacy laws vary widely by state and country, making it crucial to work with experienced legal professionals. Stronger Together Surrogacy evaluates these factors before matching to safeguard everyone throughout the process. Key legal considerations also include:
- Parental Rights: Establishing legal parental rights for the intended parents, which may involve pre-birth or post-birth orders.
- Surrogacy Agreements: Detailed contracts outlining the surrogate’s compensation, medical care, and responsibilities.
