Sera’s Birth Story
Early Labor
It had been raining almost all week, when we finally had a small break and decided to get out of the house for a treat. We had just walked into the ice cream shop when suddenly, my water broke! I was 37 weeks and immediately nervous because I knew the baby’s dad had not arrived in town yet. The plan all along was for him to be there for the birth of his child. As soon as my water broke I contacted him and my coordinator.
My coordinator was supportive, wished me luck, and to keep her updated, the Father was very nervous if he would make it in time… He quickly wrapped up business, booked his travel, and headed our way! Our quick trip to grab ice cream on March 16, 2024, turned to heading to the hospital. At 5:05 am on St. Patrick’s Day March 17, 2024, I delivered for the first time as a surrogate!
Arriving at the Hospital
We didn’t have a birth plan in place just yet, so we had to go with the flow other than me wanting an epidural, that was a must on my list! Because of the time of day, my husband stayed home with our children and I had the support of the amazing nurses on staff. All I wanted to do was sleep during active labor, but my epidural failed for a portion of the time… so it was almost natural and I had to work through the contractions.
Delivery
The baby’s father tried his hardest, but unfortunately, he didn’t make it in time for the delivery. To shine some light on how fast it truly went, my doctor almost didn’t make it either! I didn’t push long, my body knew exactly what to do and it was a quick delivery, I was so happy she was finally here!
I was eager to see what she looked like in person, and only 15 minutes later her father walked in! That’s when all of our long-awaited joy filled the room. Seeing him hold her and meet her for the first time was the best feeling. All the months leading up to this moment, he was finally holding her, he was finally a dad.
Postpartum
I was discharged the day after giving birth. My husband brought one of my daughters to visit, he congratulated the dad and they both had the opportunity to meet the baby. I felt great the first few days, I was exhausted and tried to take it easy. I will say, that recovery was a lot easier for me to heal without having to take care of the newborn.
Stronger Together Surrogacy
STS was fabulous! Ashley was amazing in helping me in every way. From the beginning to the end, and even now a short time later, she still answers my questions. I can’t wait to do another journey and have her by my side!
Journey Reflection
My advice to future surrogates is to take it easy and don’t stress, there are things you cannot control! Just try to go with the flow and remember, everything happens for a reason. This may have been my first journey, but is definitely not my last!
